"twin paradox
Not long after Einstein proposed the special theory of relativity, an apparent paradox was pointed out: the Twin Paradox.
According to this paradox, suppose one of the pair of 20-year-old twins takes off in a spaceship traveling at very high speed to distant star and back again, while the other twin remains on earth.
According to the earth twin, the traveling twin will age less.
Whereas 20 yrs might pass for the earth twin, perhaps only 1 year (depending on the spacecraft speed) would pass for the traveler.
Thus, when the traveler returns, the earthbound twin could expect to be 40 years old whereas the traveling twin would only be 21.
This is the pont of view of the twin on earth.
But what about the traveling twin?
If all inertial frames are equally good, won't the traveling twin make all the claims the earth twin does, only in reverse?
Can't the astronaut twin claim that since the earth is moving away at high speed, time passes more slowly on earth and the twin on earth will age less?
This is the opposite if what the Earth twin predicts.
They cannot both be right, for after all the spacecraft returns to earth and a direct comparison of ages and clocks can be made.

the twin on earth is right but why?"

<- that my homework *SHOCK *RUN

please help me!!

lilea - January 13, 2008 08:10 AM (GMT)
Well, the reason is because you have to bring to two twin back together to make a comparison. To do that, the twin that is out in space has to turn around and return to Earth. During that time, that twin is not in an inertial frame of reference so that would make that one the one that is younger.

I hope that makes sense...I confused me the first time I was learning it. @@

Lila - January 13, 2008 06:50 PM (GMT)
Doesn't the answer also have to do with how the Earth revolves or something? *?? Or at least that's what comes to my mind

liliea: well, i am a huge reading and math geek so....

Liz *XD

chasiewbao - January 14, 2008 03:21 AM (GMT)
juro-chan, how old are you? *??
this seems so complicated, i've heard of it before, but never had to do it in school, but here's my 2 cents:

i think that what the twin in space is right and the twin on earth is right as well, but since the twin in space returns to earth, then the claim on the age of the twin in space does not apply, only the claim of the twin on earth applies.

strawberryvanilla_0510 - January 14, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)

i'm pretty old though compared to angelivory and ervryone else i guess it's a bad idea to put that in here *ROLL *RUN sorry guys :D

i'm actually SIXTEEEN YEARS OLD

it's supposed to be passed this wednesday but then we beg our teacher <he's 24 years old, a genious *SHOCK > if we can extend it to monday :D *ROLL *LOVE

ahhh PHYSICS IS SOO HARD
*RUN *OMG

we are studying Enstien's relativity *HI

*LOVE if you could please ask your parents, friends, relatives, teachers and all *ROLL *LOVE

please! please! eheeh <seems like i'm too demanding *ROLL *LOVE > forgive me!

*SHOCK *RUN

what part did you guys didn't understand? the twin at earth was claiming that the one in space would be younger sice he/she is flying away from earth at a speed nearest to the speed of light, the twin in space is claiming that twin in earth woul be younger since if you would look at it at another angle and suppose that the earth is moving away from the spaceship rather than the spaceship going away from the earth <the twin in space's point of view>,

===============
did u get it? *ROLL
no do u guys understand?

*ROLL thank you guys! *ROLL

chasiewbao - January 15, 2008 07:00 PM (GMT)
ok, let me try to explain a little bit more, even though it might not be the right answer. Right now, there is a twin on earth and a twin in space. The point of view of the twin on earth, is different from the point of view of the twin in space. So if you are standing on earth, then the claim that the twin on earth makes is true, because you have the same point of view as him. However, if you were in space, then you are in a completely different environment as the person on earth and thus, if you were standing in space, then the claim that the twin in space makes is correct. However, in the end, the twin in space comes back to earth. Now, both twins are on earth and thus you cannot use the claim that the twin in space is correct because he is no longer in space. If both twins are standing on earth, then the claim that the twin on the earth makes is correct. This also works the other way, if the twin in space stayed in space and the twin on earth went to join him, then the claim that the earth twin makes would no longer be valid, only the claim that the twin in space would work. I hope that...cleared it up a bit?

lilea - January 16, 2008 01:21 AM (GMT)
What Chasie said is pretty accurate, but if you still are having troubles getting the concept then I'll try explaining it again.

my chemistry teacher in high school and college were both so stupid!
in high school, my teacher didn't even know what he was talking about half the time and was always corrected by the students. in college, my professor was always like "here's the wrong answer, [goes through it for one hour] oh we don't have time for the right method to do it, we'll do it next time" and we NEVER did it *MANGRY

lilea - January 18, 2008 12:53 AM (GMT)
*OMG I failed my chem lab this week because I lost all my aspirin that I was supposed to collect. /random...ish

But, I do think that the teacher kind of makes a difference in whether you like a subject or not.

chasiewbao - January 18, 2008 03:45 AM (GMT)
lol, i made aspirin last semester in my chem lab! oh yah lilea, was it ur friend who went to boston university? u still didn't tell me his/her name unless it's a secret *NOOO

lilea - January 18, 2008 05:10 AM (GMT)
Did you ask me before? It's not a secret, I must have just missed it. *WIPE

Her name is Mia (if you are curious about her last name, I'll pm it to you). She's a freshman who's a bio major.

*SHOCK I checked Jurokume's profile and we have the same birthday *EH

Anyways, next year, I need to take biology and the following year, physics.

@MissMoon and Liz: She stated in big, colorful text that she's 16 *DROP
